From Nov. 1st till Jan. 24th 2010 Artists against war – and the dove flies on The exposed works of art are from the collection of the association ‘art for peace’. The major inventory of the collection is a part of the historical touring exhibition “artists against war” from the time of arming of the Federal Republic of Germany which took place in the fifties of the last century, expanded and completed by works of the following decades. The tradition of socially committed art of Fritz Cremer, Waldemar Grzimek, Hanns Kralik, Marie Marcks, Carlo Schellemann, Dore Vax and many others will be continued. The exhibition is set up by historical works from artists who think about today´s wars, peace and military conflicts. Realisation: Kunst für Frieden e. Their common concern is the conflict in Irak and the war in general.  Martin
Gietzstudied art-pedagogics and graphic-design. Since 1974 he works as painter and graphic artist as well as an art-teacher in Berlin. He is regually exhibiting abroad and in Germany and is represented in public and private collections. In his artistic work - in particular landscapes and cities - he often is influenced by his impressions and his experinces (especially during his journeys). In his multifarious artwork he is always emphatizing social problems and takes a stand against war, violence and destruction. Not only is he showing his etchings, but we can also discover a rarity in this exhibition: A woodcut (2,5 x 1,5 m) which was printed with a bulldozer.  Sabine Maier-Wallmannives and works as a painter in Berlin. Since 1999 she exhibits in Berlin and Basel. The graphic platform is the base of her artwork. She is usually working in oil on large scaled canvas. In order to catch the emotions from the distress and grief as well as oppression of the war in Irak, she will utilize 1cm2 details taken out of the photos.They are extremely enlarged and set into a new context. So we are introduced to pictures which are far away from her usual colourful style. Within this cycle they are reduced to black and white. »Durst«, this picture is based on an enlarged detail of two water-containers. Sig Bang Schmidt Born 1958 in Germany / Hockenheim lives and works as an independent artist in Berlin / Germany and Vienna / Austria. Steve Dalachinsky was born in Brooklyn, New York / Manhattan where he has been living for the past 35 years, writing poetry for many years and working with many international musicians. An extraordinary artistic cooperation The bright and intense, computer-painted, original WW1 - photography by Sig Bang Schmidt inspired Steve Dalachinsky to create his exclusive poems. They worked together from 2002 - 2004 and created a series on art & poetry, that expels the transformation and fragmentation of the real and the unreal of war itself. You are not going to see any of those heroes, no glorification of the past, no artistic mystification - these two artist only proceed a 21st Century View on World War One. They do bring the past into the present and help us to have a closer view on this fundamental war. This year we have the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of "The Great War" the outbreak of mass-destruction-weapons and military-science, that brought us instant food and non-stop fear. February 21th - April 25th 2003 Marc Dettmann »The Desasters of War - 12 Screenprints on litho film after Goya« Francisco de Goya witnessed the war between the Spanish and the occupying French. In his etching series »Los Desastres de la Guerra« he refrains from depicting events in an anecdotal fashion. In the titles of his prints Goya comments critically on the cruelty of war, its suffering and dehumanising effect on the civilian population, without limiting himself to simply reporting pivotal events. The war he depicts is universal war. What Goya showed openly in the early 19th Century is today vague or completely disguised by censorship. These works have their origins in the first US military attacks against Afghanistan in late October of 2001. Television screens show soldiers' grainy silhouettes, one sees light-green tracer ammunition arching through the night towards an unseen target. As in the last Gulf War the battlefield appears like a meadow filled with fireflies and other nocturnal insects, but without warfare itself. Through the complete exlusion of violence by the night-vision lense an almost abstract spectacle is transmitted into one's living room. I photographed the reports directly from the TV screen. The 35mm camera exaggerated the abstraction even further; shapes emerge from the footage and regain their original horror since direct depiction is far less cruel than abstract images brought to life by one's imagination. Photographs of German suburbia, printed not on photo paper, but on transparent litho film complement the television images. Houses float vaguely in front of the images of warfare merging sender and receiver, or for the latter more correctly consumer of information. War thus enters the living room. Explosions and attack helicopters on semi-transparent film give rise to associations with cancerous tumors on X-ray sheets. The images spread, pulsating through suburban gardens or appearing in front of half-closed curtains. Today war seems clean, »politically correct«, but the titles of Goya's prints are still valid today. They provide the critical commentary to the images, revealing that the ravages of war remain the same throughout the centuries and cannot be blanked out through attempts to edit information. The artist: Marc Dettmann (born 1975 in Hannover) lives and works in Berlin since march 2002. He studied graphic design in Hildesheim and, while on an exchange programme to Spain, painting in Madrid. On graduating he became tutor for printmaking at the University of Applied Science in Hildesheim. Following several group exhibitions thoughout Germany he presents his first solo exhibition at the Anti-War-Museum, Berlin. ................................................................................................................. | The Peace Gallery presents international artists
working with different techniques, materials and approaches. Art history knows death, war, destruction and violence from the very beginnings of human living. For example the hunting and killing of animal and man is present in the cave-paintings of Lascaux. We find scenes of fighting at antique temples as well as the effects of destruction in paintings by Rembrandt etc. The place, the Peace Gallery, is defined; art is free. Artists are free to present their work in this context. The idea is to present artists whose work reflects elementary themes of life. The life of man and animal is always in danger. Life is threatened, destroyed, exterminated, today as well as in the past. The Nazi-crimes against humanity are still present. Therefore it is also the protection from violence, destruction and extermination that is at stake. And the love of life, and of our neighbours. These thoughts are being reflected by the exhibitions at the Peace Gallery. It is not enough to show violence and fear; it is necessary to irritate and to break with our narrow perspectives and perceptions. |
